Correct a serial number
- How-to
- Inventory
- Who can do this: Admin, Warehouse Manager, Floor Supervisor, Warehouse Operative
- Checked on 27 October 2026
Fix a wrong serial number that was typed or scanned in error, keeping the unit's history and a record of who changed it and why.
In short
Go to Inventory › Inventory Items, find the unit by its serial number, select the arrow beside it, then Correct Serial Number. Enter the right serial and why, and select Record Correction.
Before you start
You need to be a Warehouse Operative, a Floor Supervisor, a Warehouse Manager or an Admin. If you don't see Correct Serial Number, ask a Warehouse Manager.
This is for Serialized Inventory only. Have the unit or its box to hand, so you copy the serial number from the label itself. You can correct it only at a desk: the Rapid Scanner doesn't read serial numbers.
Steps
-
Go to Inventory › Inventory Items and search for the serial number as Stockist holds it, such as
BDP25002115. -
Select the arrow beside the unit, then Correct Serial Number. Current Serial Number shows the serial Stockist holds.
-
Enter the Corrected Serial Number from the unit's label, such as
BDP25002151. -
Enter a Reason, such as "ASN listed BDP25002115; the unit label and box both read BDP25002151".
-
Select Record Correction. Stockist confirms it:
Serial number corrected from BDP25002115 to BDP25002151
If another unit of the product already has that serial, Stockist refuses and changes nothing:
Serial number [BDP25002151] is already recorded for product [KES-BUDS-PRO].
Check the label again. If both units really show the same serial, change one to Quarantined and ask the client which is which.
What happens next
The unit keeps its place, status and history. The Serial Number Correction records both serials, who made it and why. Everywhere Stockist shows the unit, it now shows the new serial number.
A unit whose dock scan was reversed keeps the serial it was scanned with, and can't be corrected.
