What each part of a location's code means, how the code styles build codes, and which code to scan, type or read.
In short
A location's Code is unique in its zone and is what its barcode holds. Its Full Location Code puts the warehouse and zone codes in front, such as COL-PR-A-01-B-2, and is unique in your team.
The codes
Each location has a Location Code and a Full Location Code, built on its warehouse's Warehouse Code. Examples are from the Trentside demo's Colwick Distribution Centre.
| Code | Example | Unique in |
|---|---|---|
| Warehouse Code | COL |
Your team |
| Zone code | PR |
Its warehouse |
| Location Code | A-01-B-2 |
Its zone |
| Full Location Code | COL-PR-A-01-B-2 |
Your team |
You see the first three as Code on the warehouse, zone or location, and the last as Full Location Code. The Warehouse Code is also in delivery numbers, such as INB-COL-000023. A location's label has its Location Code as the barcode, with the Full Location Code in small print under it.
The Full Location Code is always the warehouse, zone and location codes joined by -. A location with no zone has no zone part, such as W1-DOCK-1.
Code styles
Batch Generate builds Location Codes in one of two code styles.
| Style | Example | Built from |
|---|---|---|
| Short | A1A1 |
Aisle letters, rack numbers, shelf letters and location numbers, with no separator |
| Custom | A-01-B-2 |
Each level's Prefix, letters or numbers and Padding, joined by the Separator (- to start) |
Colwick's pick faces use Custom with no separator and racks padded to 2 digits: P01A1. Its pallet racking uses Custom with -: A-01-B-2.
The parts of a location code
So what does A1A1 mean? Aisle A, rack 1, shelf A, location 1. The last part of a code, for the location itself, is its Location Segment.
| Part | In A-01-B-2 |
In A1A1 |
|---|---|---|
| Aisle | A |

| Rack | 01 |

| Shelf | B |
A |
| Location, the Location Segment | 2 |

Warehouse Codes

|---|---|
| 1 to 4 capital letters or digits | W1, LEI, COL |
| No hyphen or space | W-1 is refused |
| Lower case becomes capitals | w1 is saved as W1 |
| Fixed once a Transaction Number, such as a delivery's, has used it | INB-COL-000023 keeps COL |
| Never used again by another warehouse once numbers carry it | Not even after the first warehouse is deleted |
Which code to scan or type
| You have | What Stockist finds |
|---|---|
| A label's barcode, the Location Code | The location in your Working Location's zone, or the only location in your team with that code |
| A Full Location Code | That location, from anywhere |
On the Rapid Scanner, scan a location in the zone first, so it becomes your Working Location. When typing a code that more than one zone uses, type the Full Location Code instead.
