How Stockist numbers locations in the order pickers walk them, and how zones, serpentine aisles and later batches change the numbers.

In short

Each location's Pick Sequence is its place in the walk through its zone, so pickers visit locations in number order. Numbers restart in every zone, and pickers walk the zones in the warehouse's Zone Walk Order.

How a batch numbers its locations

Batch Generate numbers the new locations of a zone in walking order:

  1. Aisle by aisle, in the order of the aisle rule.
  2. Along each aisle, rack by rack.
  3. On each rack, shelf by shelf.
  4. On each shelf, location by location.

With Apply Serpentine (S-Curve) Pick Path on, every second aisle walks its racks in reverse. A picker goes up one aisle and back down the next, instead of walking back to the start each time.

The serpentine pick path. A picker walks aisle P from rack 01 to rack 06, then aisle Q back from rack 06 to rack 01, then aisle R from rack 01 to rack 06.

At Colwick, the pick faces have 3 aisles, P, Q and R, of 6 racks, with 12 locations on each rack. P01A1 is 1 and P06D3 is 72. Aisle Q then starts at its far end, so Q06A1 is 73.

Where the numbers start

  • Starting Sequence Number sets the first number. Left empty, numbering carries on after the zone's highest Pick Sequence.
  • Sequence Step Increment sets the gap between numbers. A step of 10 leaves gaps for locations added in between later.
  • Only new locations get numbers. Locations that already exist keep theirs, so adding a rack to a zone never renumbers it.

Locations you add one at a time

A location added with New Location takes the Pick Sequence you enter, and you can't change it later. A location with no Pick Sequence is walked last in its zone, in code order.

Zones and the Zone Walk Order

Pick Sequences restart in every zone, so two zones can both have a location numbered 1. A pick list walks the warehouse's zones in its Zone Walk Order, then each zone in Pick Sequence.

At Colwick, pickers walk Pick Faces first, then Pallet Racking, then the Hazardous Goods Cage. A zone left off the Zone Walk Order is walked last, in code order.
