What happens when a picker selects Short, where Stockist looks for the stock, how the order is settled, and how a blind Location Count puts the books right.
In short
A picker who can't find all the units selects Short with a reason and gets the next pick at once. Stockist looks for the stock elsewhere and flags the location. Nothing leaves the books until a blind Location Count says it isn't there.
The picker's part
For a Short Pick, the picker selects Short and one Short Pick Reason: see Pick with Next List. The picker never searches for the stock.
| Reason | Means | Then |
|---|---|---|
| Not enough here | Fewer units than the pick asks for, or none | The location is flagged for a count |
| Damaged | Units are here but not fit to send | The units the picker counts become Damaged where they stand, and the location is flagged |
| Wrong product here | The location holds something other than this product | The location is flagged |
| Wrong lot or date | The lot or expiry isn't what the pick says | The location is flagged |
| Can't reach | The stock is here but blocked or unsafe | No flag: a Floor Supervisor is called to the stop |
Looking elsewhere
Stockist frees the units that weren't picked and reserves other stock for the order at once. It follows the order's Stock Rotation Policy and never takes stock from the short location. It doesn't take stock from quarantine, the dock, staging or a flagged location either.
What it finds becomes a Re-pick on the same list. It goes in its walking place if the picker hasn't passed it, otherwise at the end. If the list is finished, it goes on a follow-up list, drawn first for the order's collection.
If the stock is only in locations allocation doesn't use, the Floor Supervisors are told how much and where. Moving it to a pick location tops the order up: see Stock in Reserve.
When nothing is found
Each order on the pick is settled one way:
- Something of the order is picked, and the client allows partial shipments: the rest becomes a Backorder at once.
- Something is picked, and the client doesn't: Stockist red tags the order as Short at picking. On a Cluster List its tote goes to the Red Tag Location. A Floor Supervisor decides: see Resolve a red tag.
- Nothing of the order is picked: it waits under Not enough stock, as an order does before release.
A short pick never moves the Must-Ship-By, because the stock was on the books. Clients read the outcome, such as "1 × KES-ONE-BLK short at picking; picked from other stock.", never the location or reason.
Flagged for Count
Every reason but Can't reach marks the whole location Flagged for Count, for every product and client in it. Nothing new is reserved from it or put away into it. Stock already reserved there is still picked, so one short pick doesn't stop others.
The units not found stay on the books, Available but out of reach of new orders, until the count.
The Location Count
A flagged location gets a Location Count at once. A Floor Supervisor can also raise one by hand for any location.
Any Warehouse Operative counts it blind on the Rapid Scanner: see Count a location. Damaged stock there stays where it is and doesn't stop the count.
- The count matches the books: the flag clears and the location is in use again.
- It differs: a Floor Supervisor checks it under Location Counts on the Pick Board: see Confirm a count that differs.
Confirming corrects the books with a Quantity Correction per line of stock, named "Location Count after short pick on PCK-…". Units not found go Not Found, and units found over the books become Available and top up waiting orders. For stock that isn't on the books at all, the Floor Supervisor names a Quarantine Location to take it to. Nothing is added to the books, and the Warehouse Managers are told.
